Why visit Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania?. Ngorongoro crater is the world largest caldera, located in Ngorongoro Conservation Area (809,440 ha) that was established in the year 1959 as multiple land-use area expanses of highlands, plains, savanna woodlands, and forests; from the plains of Serengeti National Park n the north-west and to the eastern arm of great Rift Valley The place is inhabited with semi-nomadic Massai pastoralists who practice traditional livestock grazing.  This place has global importance to the presence of globally threatened species such as black rhino, the density of wildlife inhabiting the area, and the annual migration of wildebeest, zebra, Thompson’s, and Grant’s gazelles among other animals.


Historically the place is known for displaying human evolution and human-environment dynamics including early hominid footprints dating back 3.6 million years. Olduvai Gorge a 14kmlong deep ravine is also located in the conservation area.

LOCATION:

Ngorongoro crater is located in the northern part of Tanzania and the eastern Great Rift Valley arm managed by Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority located in the villages of Oloirobi district. The park has contributed to the growth of the surrounding communities where the park fees collected are taken back to the communities for the development of infrastructures such as schools, water, electricity, and hospitals.

BEST TIME TO VISIT THE CRATER:

It s open to visit the whole year but the best time is the month of June to September and December to February. There is the presence of animal species such as lions, cheetahs, elephants, buffaloes among others that would be easily spotted during those seasons as they all come out in search of water.

ACTIVITIES AND ATTRACTIONS;

Some of the attractions include the wildlife species whereby the conservation area is known to be the only place in the world to find the big 5 mammals of Africa that is buffalos, lions, elephants, leopards, and rhinos. Other attractions include bird species, the amazing caldera of Ngorongoro crater, gold mountains, Olduvai museums, and footprints at the Laetoli.

Ngorongoro has a number of lodges and hotels around the park facing the caldera crater lake of Ngorongoro to offer great views which allow travelers to come close to wildlife interact with them.
